WhatsApp has officially launched its long-awaited “Message Summaries” feature, allowing users to quickly catch up on conversations they’ve missed. Built using Meta AI and Private Processing technology, the feature can summarize unread messages into concise bullet points no need to scroll through endless back-and-forths when you’re pressed for time.

The feature works seamlessly and respects privacy, according to WhatsApp. When enabled, you can tap on the unread message count within a chat, and Meta AI will generate a private summary of the conversation. Neither Meta, WhatsApp, nor the other chat participants can view your summaries. In fact, no one will even know you used the feature.
Privacy has been a cornerstone of this rollout. Message Summaries are powered by Meta’s Private Processing tech, ensuring messages remain encrypted and locally processed on your device. Summaries aren’t shared with Meta, and the feature is completely optional turned off by default. You can enable it for select chats via the Advanced Chat Privacy settings.

For now, the feature is exclusive to US users in English, but WhatsApp confirmed a wider rollout is planned later this year. It’s a welcome addition for busy users juggling multiple chats, work, and life on the go a smart, AI-powered shortcut that balances convenience with privacy.
