Sony might finally be entering the 200MP smartphone camera race later this year. While Samsung has dominated this space, Sony has traditionally focused on 50MP one inch sensors. However, a new leak suggests Sony’s upcoming 200MP sensor will be “a little bigger” than Samsung’s 1/1.3-inch variants, potentially allowing for better light intake and superior image quality.

Despite mixed reviews on full resolution 200MP shots, Sony’s sensor could excel in lossless zoom capabilities, delivering 2x and 3x zoom without relying on a dedicated short range telephoto lens. Additionally, Sony’s advanced imaging technologies, such as its two layer transistor tech, might offer further improvements in detail and dynamic range.

If the rumors hold true, Sony’s entry into the 200MP market could shake up mobile photography, challenging Samsung’s dominance. More details are expected as we approach the sensor’s potential launch later this year.
