Scientists Achieve Near Perfect Lithium Recovery in EV Battery Recycling

Chinese researchers have developed a breakthrough battery recycling method, recovering 99.99% of lithium from used batteries. Using a neutral leaching technique with the amino acid glycine, this innovation eliminates harsh chemicals, making recycling safer, faster, and more efficient. Nickel (97%), cobalt (92%), and manganese (91%) are also effectively recovered within 15 minutes.

This environmentally friendly approach reduces contamination risks and lowers recycling costs, supporting a sustainable closed loop battery lifecycle. With millions of EV batteries reaching end of life soon, this advancement arrives at a crucial time. The U.S. Inflation Reduction Act further promotes domestic battery recycling, reinforcing supply chain independence.
