Samsung is reportedly preparing to supply Apple with advanced 3-layer stacked image sensors for the iPhone 18 series, expected in 2026. This new sensor technology, more advanced than Sony’s current Exmor RS used in iPhones, will allow Apple to improve camera speed, dynamic range, and low-light performance. The stacked sensor design separates the photodiode and processing layers, resulting in faster image capture and superior quality photos.
The 48MP wide cameras in the iPhone 18 are expected to feature this cutting-edge sensor. In parallel, Samsung is working on its own 500MP sensor for future Galaxy devices, further advancing its mobile camera capabilities. This marks a significant shift in Apple’s sourcing of image sensors, as Sony has long been the supplier for iPhones. Additionally, the iPhone 18 series will feature TSMC’s 2nm-based A20 and A20 Plus chips, setting the stage for Apple’s most powerful iPhone yet.
