Pokémon Go Maker Niantic Reportedly Looking to Sell Game Development Business

Niantic, the creator of Pokémon Go, is reportedly exploring the sale of its game development unit. According to Bloomberg, the company is in talks with Scopely, a mobile game developer owned by Saudi Arabia’s Savvy Games Group, with a potential deal valued at $3.5 million.

Pokémon Go

While Niantic pioneered AR gaming, its success has largely been tied to Pokémon Go. Other titles, such as Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and NBA All-World, were shuttered due to underperformance. Over the past two years, Niantic has undergone multiple layoffs, cutting 230 employees in 2023.

The company has since shifted focus toward geospatial AI models and machine learning-driven scene mapping. Neither Niantic nor Scopely has commented on the rumored deal.
