On June 5, 2025, OPPO announced a global patent licensing agreement with Volkswagen, granting the German automaker access to OPPO’s cellular standard-essential patents (SEPs) portfolio — including critical 5G technologies. The move aims to enhance the connected vehicle experience across Volkswagen’s product lineup.
This marks OPPO’s first-ever bilateral patent licensing deal with a connected-car company. It signals OPPO’s growing footprint beyond smartphones, expanding its 5G patent clout into automotive tech a sector increasingly hungry for stable, high-speed connectivity.

Volkswagen, still playing catch-up in China’s tech-driven auto market, seems eager to level up its vehicle software experience. The company praised OPPO’s IP leadership, with both sides hailing the deal as a “business-focused collaboration” — IP diplomacy at its cleanest.

As of March 2025, OPPO holds over 62,000 granted patents globally and ranks eighth worldwide in 5G patent strength. This deal underscores its ambition to build a high-value, sustainable patent ecosystem and maybe help Volkswagen’s dashboard stop lagging.
