OpenAI has its eyes on Google Chrome. In a surprising courtroom revelation, ChatGPT chief Nick Turley testified that OpenAI would be interested in buying Chrome if the US Department of Justice forces Google to sell it. Turley claimed integrating Chrome into OpenAI would help create an “AI-first” web experience, deeply weaving generative AI tools into everyday browsing.

This comes amid the Department of Justice antitrust push against Google’s dominance in search and browser markets. Turley noted “many other parties” would be keen on acquiring the world’s most popular browser too.

While the idea of an AI-driven Chrome sounds futuristic, it raises eyebrows given AI’s ongoing struggles with accuracy and safety. Google, Apple, and even OpenAI itself have faced criticism for hallucinations and AI misfires. An AI-first browser could either be a revolutionary step or a privacy and misinformation nightmare.
