iPhone 17 Air Was Almost Portless, But EU Concerns Stopped Apple

Apple initially planned to make the iPhone 17 Air completely wireless, eliminating the USB-C port. However, concerns over European Union regulations forced the company to reconsider. Reports suggest Apple tested a thinner 6.9-inch design, but it was scrapped due to potential durability issues, reminiscent of the “Bendgate” controversy with the iPhone 6 Plus in 2014.

Instead, Apple settled on a 6.6-inch model that is about two millimeters thinner than existing iPhones. Despite its reduced size, the iPhone Air is expected to maintain similar battery life due to a new battery design. While Apple has long aimed for a sleek, lightweight design, balancing durability and practicality remains a challenge.

The iPhone 17 Air will now include a USB-C port, ensuring compliance with EU laws. Expected to launch in fall 2025 as part of the iPhone 17 lineup, the device is set to deliver Apple’s signature premium experience while addressing regulatory concerns.
