iPhone 16e Debuts as Apple’s First 2025 Release – But at What Cost?

iPhone 16e

Apple has officially launched the iPhone 16e, its first device of 2025, and while it’s being labeled as an “affordable iPhone,” its pricing across different regions raises eyebrows. Starting at $599 in the U.S., the 16e is significantly more expensive in markets like Europe, India, and Japan, with prices going up to €1,029 for the 512GB variant. This has led many to question whether Apple is truly offering an entry-level device or simply a repackaged version of older iPhone components at a premium price.

While it features a custom 5G modem, the Apple C1, and a binned A18 chip, it lacks key features like MagSafe, which Apple has included in almost all iPhones since 2020. The absence of vibrant color options also makes it feel less appealing compared to past “budget” iPhones like the iPhone 5c.

Beyond pricing concerns, the iPhone 16e does introduce an important milestone for Apple—the debut of its in-house C1 5G modem. After years of speculation, Apple has finally taken a major step towards reducing its reliance on Qualcomm for cellular technology. If it delivers strong performance, this could justify Apple’s $1 billion acquisition of Intel’s modem business. Another highlight is its potential battery life, with Apple claiming 26 hours of video playback, exceeding the iPhone 16’s 22-hour rating.

However, nostalgia hits hard with the removal of the home button and mute switch, which have been staples of the iPhone lineup for years. While the Action Button offers more customization, longtime users may miss the simplicity of the physical mute switch. Ultimately, the iPhone 16e seems to be a mixed bag a technically competent device that might struggle to justify its price, especially outside the U.S.
