Instagram Threads Finally Adds DMs… Two Years Late

It only took two years, but Instagram Threads is finally rolling out direct messaging (DMs) — a feature so basic, its absence felt like a bug. Instagram Head Adam Mosseri confirmed the feature’s gradual release in a Threads post, calling it a “top request since launch.” You think?

This long-overdue feature will allow one-to-one conversations within Threads, a platform that was meant to be Meta’s big answer to X (Twitter). While the idea of fostering open dialogue is nice, it’s wild that Meta needed almost two years to realize that messaging might be useful on a social platform.

Even Bluesky, the indie decentralized X rival, managed to ship a Discover and Trending tab before Threads got around to DMs. At this rate, it feels like Meta’s dev team is working on dial-up. There’s no word on when DMs will be available for everyone, but early July — conveniently Threads’ second anniversary — is the rumored date.

And honestly? Here’s hoping there’s a setting to turn them off, because the last thing some of us need is another inbox begging for attention.
