Google accidentally leaked its upcoming Android Material 3 Expressive design, ahead of the official reveal at Google I/O. The blog post, which was swiftly taken down but preserved by the Wayback Machine and 9to5Google, revealed extensive details about the new design direction.

Material 3 Expressive is positioned as Google’s most-researched design overhaul ever, built on studies involving eye tracking, focus groups, and usability experiments. The aim? To move beyond clean, utilitarian interfaces and embrace bold colors, dynamic shapes, and emotionally engaging layouts. Early feedback rated it significantly higher for energy, creativity, and friendliness, with improvements in user navigation speed and UI comprehension.

Among the leaked concepts was a floating pill-shaped toolbar, edge-to-edge designs, and repositioned key actions like a larger, prominent Send button in Gmail. Google claims this approach helps users spot essential actions up to 4x faster. Though these are concept designs for now, a redesigned Google Clock UI already hints at what’s coming. Expect a full showcase at Google I/O this month.
