Google Photos Now Watermarks AI-Edited Images Using SynthID

Google Photos is introducing a foolproof way to watermark AI-edited images using its SynthID technology. Starting this week, images modified with Magic Editor’s Reimagine tool will carry an imperceptible digital watermark to indicate AI involvement.

SynthID, developed by Google DeepMind, embeds watermarks into AI-generated content without affecting image quality. Unlike metadata, these watermarks remain detectable even after cropping, filtering, or recoloring. Users can verify an image’s authenticity using the “About this image” feature in Search or Chrome.

Google aims to increase transparency as AI editing becomes more advanced, ensuring users can distinguish between original and AI-altered images.
