Google is getting ready to bring automatic passkey upgrades to Android Password Manager. A new code teardown by Android Authority reveals signs of a feature that will automatically convert your passwords into passkeys when logging into compatible sites and apps.

Passkeys are a safer, faster alternative to traditional passwords, letting you authenticate with a device PIN, fingerprint, or face scan. While Google Chrome already supports automatic password-to-passkey conversion on desktops, Android users have had to upgrade passwords manually until now.

The discovery was made in the latest Google Play Services beta (v25.19.31), where Android Authority managed to activate the in-development feature. Users will be able to opt out if they prefer passwords or want to control when conversions happen.
Additionally, Google is also working on adding passkey import/export support, which will make it easier for users to migrate passkeys across devices and platforms. As passwordless login slowly gains traction, this move could give passkey adoption a much-needed boost.
