Google Ditches Samsung, Moves Tensor Chip Production to TSMC

Google is officially moving its future Tensor chip production to TSMC, breaking away from Samsung’s foundry. According to sources close to Digitimes, the upcoming Tensor G5 expected to power the Pixel 10 series this fall will be manufactured by the Taiwanese chip giant. This confirms long-standing rumors from 2024 about Google seeking more reliable and efficient silicon.

The deal reportedly spans three to five years, meaning TSMC will likely handle Tensor production up to the Pixel 14 series. This shift is expected to benefit Pixel devices with faster, more efficient chipsets. TSMC has a proven track record of delivering superior chip performance, as seen when the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus outperformed its Samsung-made predecessor.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s chip division continues to face issues, including yield problems with its Exynos 2500 chip and internal restructuring plans. As Samsung MX prepares to take over chip development, Google’s exit signals growing challenges for Samsung’s semiconductor ambitions.
