The next-generation Formula E car (Gen4) will bring significant improvements in speed and size, aiming to match the pace of current Formula 2 cars. The design, previewed by select stakeholders at the Jeddah E-Prix, showcases a more conventional formula car look with two distinct aerodynamic packages. Manufacturer testing is set to begin this September, well ahead of its 2026-27 season debut.

Unlike Gen3, which faced developmental hurdles, the Gen4 car benefits from extended lead time for refinement. FIA technical manager Vincent Gaillardot confirmed that performance targets position the new design near Formula 2 speeds. The FIA, in collaboration with Spark Racing Technologies, Bridgestone, and other suppliers, aims to maximize efficiency with high and low downforce configurations for qualifying and race settings.

Testing will commence in Spain with a prototype mule car in April, followed by a manufacturer group test later in 2025. Registered teams like Jaguar, Maserati, Nissan, Porsche, and Lola will have early access to fine-tune the vehicle. The Gen4 car represents Formula E’s commitment to proving that electric racing can deliver top-tier performance.
