Meta has officially begun rolling out passkeys on Facebook for iOS and Android devices, a significant step toward ditching passwords for good. This modern login method allows users to securely access their accounts using the fingerprint, Face ID, or PIN already set up on their phones. No password memorization or SMS code hassle involved.

Passkeys are digital credentials developed by the FIDO Alliance, designed to reduce phishing risks, password theft, and reuse vulnerabilities. Meta’s new implementation makes logging into Facebook faster and more secure, especially on mobile. Even better once Messenger’s support arrives in the coming months, the same passkey will work across both platforms.

Setting up a passkey is simple. You can find the option in the Accounts Center within Facebook’s Settings menu or be prompted during your next login. The passkey becomes the default sign-in option on that device, but users can still log in with traditional passwords if needed, like on devices without biometric support.

Passkeys won’t just be for logging in. Meta plans to expand their use to autofill payment info via Meta Pay and safeguard encrypted message backups. All passkey data, including biometric info or PINs, stays securely on your device — Meta never sees, stores, or shares them.

This rollout positions Meta alongside other major tech companies embracing passwordless login options in 2025. With password fatigue and online threats increasing, passkeys offer a balance of convenience and enhanced security. If you haven’t enabled yours yet, now might be a good time.
