DeepSeek, a new AI company founded in 2023, has taken the tech world by surprise by claiming the top spot on the Apple App Store in the US, surpassing OpenAI’s ChatGPT app. The app is also ranked #1 in 51 countries and is in the Top 10 in 111 countries worldwide.
DeepSeek’s success is attributed to its latest AI model, DeepSeek R1, which reportedly rivals the best AI models from Western companies but was trained using far fewer resources. This has caused a significant market upset, with Nvidia’s stock plummeting by 17%, losing nearly $600 billion in market value.
DeepSeek’s AI was trained on Nvidia’s H800 chips, which are a more affordable, export-restricted version of the H100. Despite digital attacks, the company has limited new sign-ups to Chinese phone numbers, while existing users continue to access the app.
