CAPCOM’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword Won’t Be Open-World & Will Last 20 Hours

CAPCOM has revealed key details about Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the highly anticipated revival of the classic Onimusha franchise. Speaking to Famitsu, producer Akihito Kadowaki and director Satoru Nihei confirmed that the game will not feature an open-world structure. Instead, it will follow a stage-based progression system and will take around 20 hours to complete.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Set mainly in Kyoto during the early Edo period, Way of the Sword reimagines the Oni and Genma clans, making it an independent story that doesn’t directly connect to past titles making it accessible to both veterans and newcomers.

On difficulty, CAPCOM aims for a balanced experience. While it won’t be as punishing as Soulslike games, bosses will still provide a challenge. The team is actively tweaking gameplay to ensure a sense of accomplishment without making the game overly difficult. With a 2026 release window, the return of Onimusha promises a modernized yet faithful experience for action fans.
