Apple Scraps AR Glasses Project: What It Means for the Future of Wearables

Apple has canceled development of its AR glasses project, codenamed N107, which was designed to pair with Macs rather than work standalone like the Vision Pro. According to reports from Mark Gurman and Bloomberg, the decision was made this week due to performance issues

The glasses were intended to resemble normal eyewear with built-in projectors displaying images and videos in each eye’s field of view, along with adaptive tint lenses that adjust based on user activity.

Initial plans to pair the device with an iPhone shifted to Macs when battery drain and chipset limitations became apparent, but testing revealed poor performance and constantly changing desired features. With the project scrapped, Meta gains a competitive advantage in the smart glasses market, bolstered by its Ray-Ban collaboration’s success. Apple’s Vision Pro has also underperformed in sales, intensifying concerns over the company’s wearable strategy. This marks a moment for Apple.
