Google is tightening the rules for Android device hardware starting with Android 15. Devices must now have at least 32GB of internal storage (up from 16GB), with 75% allocated to the data partition which stores apps, files, and system components. Devices with less than 32GB can no longer receive Android 15 updates if they were launched on earlier versions.

RAM requirements are evolving too. While 2GB and 3GB phones must use Android Go Edition, Android 16 will require 6GB of RAM for full Android, pushing 4GB devices to Go as well. These changes are aimed at ensuring smoother user experiences and better support for modern apps and features on budget phones.

Google is also introducing new emergency contact sharing rules for Android 15. Phones must allow users to opt-in to share emergency contact info during emergency calls via Emergency Location Services. This adds a privacy-focused safety net, with mandatory disclosures about shared data.
