Apple’s M5 MacBook Air Already in Development, But Don’t Expect a Design Refresh

Apple is already working on the M5 MacBook Air, despite launching the M4 models just this month. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the 13-inch and 15-inch M5 MacBook Air are in early development and could launch by March 2026.

The M5 MacBook Air is expected to retain the same design and fanless cooling as its predecessor, focusing primarily on a chipset upgrade rather than a visual refresh. Apple is reportedly planning a MacBook Pro redesign in 2026, which suggests that the MacBook Air’s design overhaul might not arrive until 2027.

The M5 chip is rumored to be built on TSMC’s third-generation 3nm process, promising enhanced performance and efficiency. If you don’t want to wait, the M4 MacBook Air remains a solid choice, featuring a desktop-class SoC in a thin and lightweight form factor. Discounts are already available, with Amazon pricing starting at $949 instead of $999.
