EU Confirms Port-Less Devices Are Allowed, Paving the Way for Apple

Apple reportedly considered making the iPhone 17 Air its first port-less device but held back due to EU regulations. However, the European Commission has clarified that USB-C is only mandatory for devices that support wired charging. This means a wireless only iPhone is fully compliant with EU rules, opening the door for Apple to drop ports entirely in future models.

The EU’s law, which mandates USB-C as the standard for wired charging, also includes provisions for harmonizing wireless charging technologies. The goal is to prevent market fragmentation and enhance interoperability, ensuring all future wireless chargers work seamlessly across devices. Apple’s MagSafe based Qi2 standard is expected to play a key role in this transition.

For now, the iPhone 17 Air will keep its USB-C port, but Apple could remove it entirely for the iPhone 18 Air. With Qi2 becoming the universal standard, a port-less future is looking increasingly likely.
