The AI race is intensifying as DeepSeek, a Chinese AI model, gains global dominance. Its open-source chatbot has skyrocketed to the top of the App Store in 51 countries, and new reports reveal that it runs on Huawei’s Ascend 910C AI chip.

DeepSeek R1 was initially trained on Nvidia H100 GPUs but now operates using the Ascend 910C for inference—generating responses based on trained data. While the 910C lacks the power for large-scale AI training, Huawei aims to bridge this gap with the upcoming Ascend 920C, which is expected to rival Nvidia’s Blackwell B200 AI chip.

With China advancing in AI hardware and software, DeepSeek’s rise challenges US AI leaders, including OpenAI and Google. As AI chip development progresses, Huawei’s influence in the AI sector is set to grow.
