Google has introduced Android XR, a new operating system designed for the next generation of extended reality (XR) devices, combining advancements in AI, AR, and VR. Developed alongside Samsung and Qualcomm, Android XR aims to create a new ecosystem for XR headsets and glasses, offering users immersive experiences. Samsung has revealed that it’s working on the first headset for Android XR, codenamed Moohan, which means “infinity” in Korean.
The device is designed to be lightweight and ergonomically optimized for comfort. It will feature state-of-the-art displays, passthrough capabilities, and natural multi-modal input, serving as a “spatial canvas” to explore Google Maps, watch YouTube, and plan trips with Gemini. Notably, Samsung’s Bixby was not mentioned in the press release, suggesting changes to its software strategy. More details about Android XR and the Moohan headset are expected next year, with further developments anticipated in the growing field of XR technology.
